Can you find CBD in pharmacies?

Since the relaxation of the legislation, CBD oil resellers have multiplied. Specialty stores, tobacconists, organic stores, pharmacies, online stores… the different points of sale are now very numerous. However, it is necessary to sort through and find out more before buying CBD oil.

The ideal is of course to be able to supply yourself in a physical pharmacy or on an online pharmacy site. This assures you in particular of the quality and origin of the product and allows you to receive reliable information from a health professional.

French pharmacies are authorized to market cannabidiol-based products. You can definitely go to your usual pharmacist and ask for one of the CBD oils, capsules or herbal teas.

However, this authorization is subject to compliance with a certain number of rules:

  • To offer CBD in pharmacies, the establishment must have received authorization from the State. Obtaining this authorization requires justifying the legality of the trade. (This is only valid for physical pharmacies, as we will see below.)
  • Cannabidiol products sold in pharmacies must comply with state recommendations: the hemp plants used in manufacturing must have a THC content of less than 0.2%, their cultivation must have been authorized, and the products must be made only from fibers and seeds.
  • Resellers are prohibited from promoting any medical or therapeutic properties of CBD products.
  • As a healthcare professional, the pharmacist must fully play his role of advising customers, and respect a code of ethics. Consequently, it is his responsibility to offer his customers quality CBD-based products that comply with the legislation, and to give recommendations regarding their use (dosage, maximum doses, etc.).

Under these conditions, pharmacies are entitled to sell CBD oils, ointments, crystals and other products. This is also the case in some of our European neighbours: in Belgium, for example, cannabidiol has been available over the counter in pharmacies since February 2020. The problem is that it is not always easy to find these products, as not all pharmacies offer them.
