Ecological fabric or how to consume responsibly
You are starting a minimalist lifestyle by opting for sustainable everyday products, avoiding plastic, choosing more natural cosmetics... Now, you are looking to know if it is possible to have an eco-friendly wardrobe? Know that you can perfectly reconcile fashion and ecology, we guide you for everything concerning ecological fabric .
What is an eco-friendly fabric?
The textile industry has been using natural fibers for centuries, but that has changed since the arrival of synthetic fibers in the 20th century. Ecological fabric is of natural origin: animal or plant. But that is not enough, for a fabric to be called ecological, its production must follow strict specifications in order to avoid ecological risks as much as possible. This guarantees production that respects animals, nature and employees. The certification bodies that establish specifications and issue labels are GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), Ecocert and Okotex. Among the ecological fabrics, we note linen, organic cotton, bamboo as well as wool and silk (of animal origin) and hemp (plant origin). Even if clothes made of ecological fabric are a little more expensive, it must be admitted that the price is compensated by the quality and durability.
The advantages of ecological fabric
Each eco-friendly fabric has its own characteristics. If you take linen, it is known to absorb moisture and reduce body temperature as well as muscle tension, especially during the summer period. Just like hemp, it is hypoallergenic, light, durable and strong. Fine and light, silk has the particularity of protecting from heat in summer and cold in winter, because it is insulating. Wool regulates humidity while allowing the skin to perspire. If it is chosen untreated, pure and virgin, it offers excellent thermal insulation. Soft and supple, organic cotton absorbs moisture, however, it does not protect sufficiently in winter. The polar fiber made with recycled plastic bottles is light and warm, and it dries quickly.
All the reasons to choose ecological fabric
The textile industry is one of the biggest polluters on our planet after the oil industry because it uses a lot of water, energy and chemicals. For example, cotton growing uses 3% of the world's cultivated land, ¼ of the insecticides and up to 30 times more water than wheat growing and 60 times more than potato growing. It should be noted that to have 1 kilo of cotton, the crop uses between 7,000 and 29,000 liters of water. This sector also emits more than 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gases every year. It should also be noted that the harmful fibers and materials used are not beneficial for health. Eco-friendly fabric is energy efficient, pesticide-free and free of harmful substances. Choosing clothes made with this type of fabric is doing something for the environment.
