Tawashi: what is it?

The tawashi is originally from Japan, it is a zero waste sponge that can be used to clean your dishes, your worktop, in short your daily life like a classic sponge. The tawashi can also be used as a glove to remove your makeup. Really too practical this little eco-friendly and too cute sponge!

This zero waste sponge is the new eco-friendly alternative to your legendary green and yellow sponge that has been lying around your sink for years.

The tawashi sponge is made exclusively from recycled fabric, such as the sleeves of old t-shirts. Perfect for giving your old clothes a new lease of life! And the second advantage of tawashi is that it is washable and therefore reusable until the end of its life, which is great.

So, it's time to throw away your old classic sponges that have a heavy impact on our environment, and switch to eco-friendly cleaning with your tawashi sponge.

DIY: tawashi tutorial

Whether you are good at DIY or not, you will see that it is very simple and that you do not need to be an expert to make this sponge.

To create your own tawashi, you need:

• A small wooden board
• A hammer
• Nails
• A ruler and a set square
• A marker
• A pair of scissors
• Old clothes

To start, you just need to draw a 16x16cm square and hammer a nail every 2cm on each side. Then you take your garment, a sleeve for example, in which you cut strips of about 2 to 3cm wide.

You start by threading your first strips onto the nails, in width and then in length, going over and under to create a sort of checkerboard. Once that's done, you'll see your first tawashi sponge appear.
