mandibular advancement orthosis, how?
discover the mandibular advancement orthosis
Snoring or sleep apnea problem? Discover the mandibular advancement device (MAD). In order to reduce obstructions and free the passage of air at the pharynx, this device keeps the lower jaw in an advanced position. This treatment is in the form of mouth guards to be placed in the mouth at night.
What is the mandibular advancement device?
Medical device, the mandibular advancement splint is only given on medical prescription to treat snoring and respiratory pauses or obstructive sleep apnea. Its purpose is to clear the airways, in particular the airway intersection between the pharynx and the larynx. This dentally anchored device is made of strong and flexible polymer (resin). It includes 2 semi-rigid gutters attached to each other by an advancement system. It also includes interchangeable adjustment rods to control mandibular advancement and a hinge at the back depending on the occlusion of the teeth. The mandibular advancement splint is custom-made according to the patient's dental impressions. It is like a mouth guard, but it is less bulky with lower and upper parts that can be moved and fixed together to keep the lower jaw or mandible in a more advanced position than normal. The advancement of the mandible to which the tongue is attached allows the opening of the airways by preventing the tongue from falling to the back of the throat during sleep, which obstructs the airways.
The conditions for fitting the mandibular advancement device
Certain conditions must be met in order to be able to fit a mandibular advancement device . There must be enough teeth, at least 6 per jaw, for this device to be retained properly. You must also have a healthy periodontium, without gingival inflammation. You must also not have joint problems, significant prognathism or cardiovascular diseases. Wearing this device during sleep is recommended in cases of mild or moderate sleep apnea. If it is severe, continuous positive airway pressure is required.
Good hygiene measures against snoring
With good hygiene measures, it is possible to stop snoring during sleep. It is necessary to stop smoking, as it causes inflammation of the mucous membranes of the throat and nose, and to reduce the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the evening since they cause the throat muscles to relax during sleep. It is also necessary to avoid tranquilizers and sleeping pills because they relax the throat muscles and make breathing difficult during sleep. Sleeping on your back can also cause the base of the tongue to descend backwards, and this contributes to reducing air circulation, which is what promotes snoring. It is best to sleep on your side. Being overweight also causes snoring, because the tissues of the pharynx obstruct the passage of air.
The mandibular advancement splint needs to be maintained every day. After each use, rinse it with warm water, brush it with a soft toothbrush like the one available from Caliquo, rinse it again and dry it with a tissue before putting it back in its box.
