How to choose your toothbrush
Since a toothbrush is a very personal item, one might think that choosing a toothbrush should be dictated by one's own preferences.
However, the toothbrush should have medium or soft bristles but not hard ones.
Indeed :
• they are more gentle on the gums (hard toothbrushes should be avoided if you have sensitive gums)
• they remove dental plaque better because their soft bristles intertwine and slide into the gaps.
Brush or massage your teeth?
It's a mistake to buy a toothbrush with hard bristles, and it's partly due to the language we use. We shouldn't talk about "brushing" like brushing shoes, but about cleaning our teeth and massaging our gums.
A high-tech or traditional toothbrush?
Today, even manual toothbrushes have become "high-tech" objects with crossed bristles or silicone strips that are supposed to improve brushing.
The placement of the bristles or the more or less triangular shape of the brush has only a minimal impact on the effectiveness of brushing. On the other hand, the length of the bristles can make a difference: the longer they are, the better they are at finding dental plaque at the back of the mouth, which is the case with the bristles of the Caliquo toothbrush.
The secret: Brush for a long time, often and with new bristles.
Your personal comfort should also be a factor when choosing your toothbrush. In any case, avoid cheap models because their bristles can injure your gums.
The majority of French people believe they respect the minimum recommended brushing time of 3 minutes. In reality, the average French person brushes for 46 seconds. This is not enough time to remove half of all plaque. And when they brush their teeth, 85% of French people don't brush properly.
If possible, use a toothbrush with a thick handle for greater dexterity. Don't forget to brush your tongue thoroughly. Brushing your teeth most importantly is in the evening because at night, we produce less saliva. However, saliva contains protective elements that prevent plaque.
Next, use dental floss to remove anything that may have gotten stuck in the small spaces between your teeth. To floss, take a long piece, wrap it around your thumbs so that only a small end remains stretched between your fingers, and gently slide it between your teeth to avoid damaging your gums.
Remember that regularly replacing your brush helps maintain good oral hygiene: clinical studies show that a new brush can remove up to 30% more plaque than a three-month-old brush.
